Alexa Design System
I built and maintained the design system behind Alexa's entire device family — Echo, Fire TV, Fire Tablets, and Alexa Mobile — plus several smaller internal teams. Four different hardware categories, one consistent design language, translated into scalable Figma libraries, tokens, and documentation used daily by teams I never met in person.
The problem
Alexa’s ecosystem spans wildly different surfaces — a screen you glance at across the kitchen, a TV remote interface, a tablet, a phone app. Without a shared system, every team was solving the same interaction problems from scratch, and inconsistency compounded fast across a multi-device product family.
The process
I worked at the layer between design and engineering — building component libraries, tokens, and templates that had to hold up across desktop and mobile, and across teams with different constraints and timelines. A meaningful part of the job was translation: taking emotional, multimodal design principles (visuals, sound, motion, haptics) and turning them into documentation precise enough for engineers to implement consistently, without flattening the parts that made Alexa feel like Alexa.
